The recipient of South Dakota
Champion of Liberty Award for 2006 is Marvin K. Bailin. Mr.
Bailin is a prominent South Dakota attorney and a partner in
Christopherson, Bailin & Anderson
Law offices in Sioux Falls. He was also a founding member
of the South Dakota Chapter of the ACLU. He acted
as ACLU state correspondent from 1951-1971, then when the
Chapter was established, he served as the Chairman of the South
Dakota Legal Committee from 1971-1973. During
his years guiding our fight for Civil Liberties the ACLU of South
Dakota worked on cases involving the rights of disabled persons,
students rights to be free from unreasonable searches, book burning,
state divorce laws and durational residency requirements, and
gender discrimination.

Lew Lubka is receiving this
year's Champion of Liberty Award from the ACLU of the Dakotas. The
award is given in recognition of an individual's contribution
to defending civil liberties and personal freedoms. Jennifer
Ring, Executive Director of the ACLU of the Dakotas, said " Mr.
Lubka's life is a model of persistence and dedication in
pursuit of 'liberty for all'. In these trying times when
so many are willing to curtail the liberties of others in the
name of national security, he stands out as a defender of equality
and justice." Mr. Lubka has been involved in many events
and organizations, including ND Peace Coalition, F-M Lighthouse,
and the ND Human Rights Coalition.
